The Sidney Museum and Arts Association, a nonprofit organization founded in 1970, is dedicated to preserving local history and promoting arts. SMAA established and maintains the Sidney Art Gallery , the Sidney Museum and the Log Cabin Museum in Port Orchard, WA.

Scholarship Requirements

The Olga "Toni" Nelson Art Scholarship is awarded to a high school student (including students being home schooled) from the South Kitsap area each year in May. Applications are available at the Sidney Art Gallery during the Student Show (held in March), as well as at the South Kitsap High School and this website. Applications are accepted from January through May. The submissions are reviewed by a committee. The decision and the award is made by the end of May. The scholarship is sent directly to the college or art school chosen by the scholarship winner once confirmation of enrollment is received by the Sidney Museum and Arts Association.

To apply, you must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and be a graduating senior from the South Kitsap area. You may submit work from any media, including photography, graphic arts, pottery, and/or sculpture for evaluation by the SMAA judges. Please provide the following:

  • A completed application
  • Portfolio containing a minimum of three pieces of original work
  • One letter of recommendations from an art teacher
  • One letter of recommendations from a teacher in a different area of study
  • One letter of recommendation from a local contact (not parent)
  • An official high school transcript
  • One page summary of long and short/term goals pertaining to education and continuance in the arts
